In this tutorial you will learn how to fix the error : "UnicodeDecodeError: 'utf-8' codec can't decode byte 0x82 in position 4: invalid start byte"

If you are getting this error when trying to open the protonvpn app on Linux mint, this means you cannot connect to servers, after some researching for awhile I didn't find the cause of error but i managed to find the solution.

It seemed like a package or something got broken when I updated the system and due to the update the protonvpn gui wasn't working anymore.

I couldn't take a screenshot at that time, but I went and checked logs and found the error that ProtonVPN Gui was showing

Logs of protonvpn are located on - /home/user/.cache/protonvpn/logs/

And the log file that you see below is called protonvpn-gui.log, if something goes bad during the startup of protonvpn gui then you can dig on that file to find the error.

Now simply follow the steps below to fix this issue :)

Step 1 - Remove Protonvpn gui

The command below will remove protonvpn gui, simply copy paste it to terminal and press enter

sudo apt remove protonvpn

Proceed by confirming with "Y" and press enter to continue the uninstall process

As you can see on the screenshot above, now protonvpn has been removed from your system

Step 2 - Reinstall Protonvpn gui

Once you have uninstalled protonvpn with the command above, you need now to install it by using this command

sudo apt install protonvpn

Step 3 - Try to Connect to servers

Once you have uninstalled and reinstalled protonvpn on Linux mint, launch the app and see if it works. If you are still getting the same error even after reinstalling it, you need to log out and login again on protonvpn.

To do this simply click over the arrow at top left

Next Click "Logout" and it should log your out of the current profile you are logged in

Then you should see this screen, all you need to do in this step is to type username and password and click login

In this tutorial I explained how to fix the issue " Error loading servers" in protonvpn on Linux mint.

Even if you are using another Operating System, the steps to fix this error should be the same so I hope this tutorial helped and fixed the issue for you.
