I installed OpenSUSE "Tumbleweed" recently, and everything went fine. However, I noticed that every app that was Installed had minimize and maximize buttons missing from the top bar of the app. The only button that was showing, was the close button.

Personally I'm not a fan of Gnome DE, but I have used Gnome on other linux distros, and I have to say this is the first time that this issue happened to me.

This is a very annoying issue because there's no way to minimize or maximize an app without using the 'super' key.

So I started looking around to see if there was something missing from my installation, and I found out that the settings to show the minimize and maximize buttons were disabled.

The good news is that, enabling these settings is very easy, and it can be done by using Gnome Tweaks tool. All you need to have is Gnome Tweaks tool installed on your computer.

In this tutorial, you will learn how to install gnome tweaks tool, and how to enable the settings for Minimize and Maximize buttons, so they appear on the title bar of the app.

Step 1 - Install Gnome Tweaks

Gnome tweaks is a tool that you can use to customize your gnome installation. This tool should be already installed on your system. However, if for some reason you can't find it, you can install it easily via the command below

sudo zypper install gnome-tweaks

Next, you will get the following prompt, press the Y key to confirm and proceed installing gnome-tweaks on your system

Wait for the installation process to finish

Now, gnome-tweaks is installed on your system.

Step 2 - Fix Minimize and Maximize missing issue

Open Gnome Menu, and search for 'tweaks', and launch Gnome Tweaks by clicking the tweaks icon

And you should see Gnome Tweaks GUI

Now you need to go to 'Window Titlebars'

And enable Minimize and Maximize settings, by clicking the switch button for each setting , as shown in the image below

As you can see, Gnome Tweaks window didn't have minimize and maximize button on the window title bar until we enabled the settings for minimize and maximize.

Both buttons should be showing now on all apps. However, if for some reason there's still an app that has these buttons missing, then I'd suggest a reboot.

Conclusion

In this tutorial, you learned how to fix the issue with minimize and maximize buttons on OpenSUSE "Tumbleweed".
