How to upgrade Linux Mint 21.2 to Linux Mint 21.3

If you are using Linux Mint 21.2 on your machine, then you may already know that the new version Linux Mint 21.3 "Virginia" has been released, and you can install it on your machine, whether by using the ISO or upgrading your current system.

In this tutorial, you will learn how to upgrade Linux Mint 21.2 to Linux Mint 21.3.

Upgrading Linux Mint 21.2 to Linux Mint 21.3 is easy, and it can be done by following the steps below.

Step 1 - Back up your system

It is recommended to create a backup of your system and files that you have on your Linux Mint 21.2 machine, before you start upgrading.

Even though the upgrade won't change anything else but the system, yet to prevent any issues, I'd recommend you keep a copy of your files just in case.

In Linux Mint 21.2 you can use Timeshift, to create a snapshot of your system.

To do so, first launch Timeshift. You can find Timeshift under the "Administration" category.

Next, you will need to authenticate in order to use Timeshift. Enter your sudo password and click to the "Authenticate" buton.

Now you should be able to create a backup of your Linux Mint 21.2 system.

Step 2 - Update your system

Next, you need to make sure that you don't have outdated packages installed on your Linux Mint 21.2 machine.

If you do, then you need to update packages that needs to be updated before proceeding to upgrade your system.

You can upgrade packages via Update Manager, simply launch Update Manager via Applications Menu, and proceed to update packages by clicking to "Install Updates" button as shown in the screenshot below.

If you don't want to use Update Manager, to upgrade packages on your system, you can also do it via the terminal.

To do so, simply run the following commands.

sudo apt update && apt upgrade -y

Step 3 - Upgrade Linux Mint 21.2 to 21.3

Update manager on Linux Mint 21.2 it's a tool that you can use to update and upgrade packages on your computer. Upgrading to Linux Mint 21.3 doesn't require you to download any additional tool, as upgrading is done via Update Manager.

First you need to launch Update manager. You can easily launch Update Manager from the applications Menu.

Once Update Manager is launched, you will see the following notification, proceed to update Update Manager by clicking to "Apply the Update" button.

Next, you will be prompted to authenticate, enter your password and proceed to update Update Manager.

As you can see, the Update Manager has been updated.

Now before we proceed any further, you need to click "Refresh" button to ensure that all packages in your system are up to date.

By now all packages in your system should be updated, which means you can now proceed to upgrade Linux Mint 21.2 to Linux Mint 21.3.

First click to the "Edit" button, and choose "Upgrade to Linux Mint 21.3 "Virginia"

Clicking to "Upgrade to Linux Mint 21.3 Virginia" will take you to the following window, click "Next" in this window.

If you want to read the Release notes, then simply click to the release link. You can also skip this step if you want, to do so click "Next".

Next, you will be taken to the features window.

This step can also be skipped. However, if you want to get informed about new features that Linux Mint 21.3 will bring, then simply click to the new features link, once done proceed to next step by clicking the "Next" button.

Once you read Release and Features of Linux Mint 21.3, you can now proceed to upgrade your Linux Mint 21.2 system.

To do so, first, check the box "I understand the risk. I want to upgrade to "Linux Mint 21.3 Virginia" and then click to "Apply".

Proceed to enter your sudo password, and then press enter to start upgrading your system.

And your system Linux Mint 21.2 is now being upgraded to Linux Mint 21.3, all you have to do now is wait for the upgrading process to be completed.

Once Linux Mint 21.2 has been upgraded to Linux Mint 21.3, you will see the following window.

Now you need to reboot your machine and proceed to verify that Linux Mint 21.3 was installed successfully.

First click to "Close" button to close the "Summary" window, and reboot your system.

Step 4 - Verify Linux Mint 21.3 Installation

Your machine should be running Linux Mint 21.3 now, and you should be able to use it.

To verify that the upgrade process, from Linux Mint 21.2 to Linux Mint 21.3 was successful, you can use the lsb_release command.

lsb_release -a

As you can see, we are now running Linux Mint 21.3 "Virginia".
