How to upgrade Linux Mint 21.1 to Linux Mint 21.2

If you are using Linux Mint on your computer, you may already know that Linux Mint released the 21.2 version called "Victoria".

The new version of Linux Mint comes with a lot of new changes, in terms of improvements, and also new features.

Linux Mint 21.2 "Victoria" will be supported until 2027.

In this tutorial, you will learn how to upgrade Linux Mint 21.1 to Linux Mint 21.2.

Step 1 - Back up your system

It is recommended to create a backup of your system and files that you have on your computer, before you upgrade. Even though the upgrade won't change anything else but the system, yet to prevent any issues, I'd recommend you keep a copy of your files just in case.

In Linux Mint you can use Timeshift, to create a snapshot of your system.

Step 2 - Upgrade your system

Update manager on Linux Mint it's a tool that you can use to update and upgrade packages on your computer. Upgrading to Linux Mint 21.2 doesn't require you to download any additional tool, as upgrading is done via Update Manager.

First you need to launch Update manager, to do this, go to "Applications Menu", and search for "Update manager" on the search box, and launch it by clicking on the icon of "Update manager"

Once Update manager is launched, click to "Edit"

Next, click to "Upgrade Linux Mint 21. Victoria"

Continue by clicking the "Next" button on the introduction window

Once you click next on the introduction window, you will see the release notes window. You can read the release notes on this step, then click the "Next" button to continue

On this step you can check out the new features on Linux Mint 21.2.

Now here you need to check the box that says "I understand the risk. I want to upgrade to "Linux Mint 21.2 Victoria"

Once checked, click to the "Apply" button to start the upgrade process

Sudo permission is required in order to upgrade to Linux Mint 21.2, proceed by entering your password and then click the "Authenticate" button.

You will see the download pop up, this means the update manager is downloading the required files for the upgrade.

You don't have to do anything on this, let the download finish and the upgrade will begin

Once all the packages are downloaded, you will see this screen, this means your system Linux mint 21.1 is being upgraded to Linux Mint 21.2

All you have to do now, is to wait for the upgrade process to be completed.

That's it! Your system has been upgraded to Linux Mint 21.2. You can now proceed to reboot, and enjoy the new upgrade.

Step 3 - Verify the Upgrade

After rebooting, you can check the os release information to make sure that the upgrade was successful.

Launch terminal, and run the following command

cat /etc/os-release

As you can see in the image below, we are using Linux Mint 21.2 "Victoria"
