How to install Xfce on Linux Mint 21

Cinnamon is the default desktop environment for Linux Mint 21. However, Linux Mint supports also other desktop environments such as : Xfce and Mate.

Linux Mint offers you different Linux Mint flavors that you can download and install on your machine, however, you can also install any of the supported desktop environments on Linux Mint even if you are running a version that doesn't have Xfce installed on it, as Xfce is simply a desktop environment, and it can be easily installed on any Linux Mint version.

In this tutorial, we'll install Xfce desktop environment on Linux Mint 21, via apt package manager.

Install Xfce on Linux Mint 21

Xfce can be installed easily on Linux Mint, as xfce is available in the default Linux Mint repositories, which means you can install Xfce directly from your termina via apt package manager.

Step 1 - Update your system

Before installing Xfce on Linux Mint, you must update your system and update any package that needs to be updated.

Whether your are running Linux Mint cinnamon or Mate, you can easily update your system by running the command below.

sudo apt update && apt upgrade -y

Step 2 - Install Xfce

Now that your Linux Mint machine has been updated, you can proceed to install Xfce.

Xfce package is available in the default repositories of Linux Mint, which means, installing Xfce can be easily done by using apt in your terminal.

To install Xfce, simply run the command below.

sudo apt install xfce4 xfce4-goodies

Step 3 - Reboot

By now Xfce should be installed in your system. Now you need to reboot your machine, in order to be able to use Xfce.

To reboot Linux Mint, execute the command below.


Step 4 - Use Xfce on Linux Mint

Xfce should be now installed in your system, which means now you should be able to use Xfce as the desktop environment for your Linux Mint machine.

Once your machine reboots, you will be taken to the login screen. Now in this step, you need to switch your current Desktop environment with Xfce.

Click to the Desktop switcher button

And Select XFCE on the sessions list.

And it will log you in on your Linux Mint machine, using XFCE as desktop environment.

Uninstalling Xfce on Linux Mint

If you want to remove Xfce on your Linux Mint machine, then all you need to do is use apt .

To do so, simply execute the command below.

sudo apt remove xfce xfce4-goodies
