Wire uses zero knowledge security feature, which means that even Wire cannot access messages that you send and receive.

Wire also uses end to end encryption to protect your messages, end to end encryption encrypts messages between the sender and receiver.

You can use Wire for both, work and personal purposes.

Wire is supported on Ubuntu, and it can be installed via the official repository of Wire.

Install Wire on Ubuntu

Step 1 - Install apt-transport-https

In order to be able to download Wire from the repository using HTTPS, first you must install apt-transport-https package on your system.

To install apt-transport-https, run the following command

 sudo apt-get install apt-transport-https

Step 2 - Add Wire GPG Key

Next, you need to import Wire's GPG key on your machine. To do this, you can download the gpg key by using wget

wget -q https://wire-app.wire.com/linux/releases.key -O- | sudo apt-key add -

Step 3 - Add Wire Repository

Once you have imported Wire's GPG key on your system, proceed to add Wire's repository. Wire's repository is the repository from where Wire will be downloaded on your machine.

To add Wire's repository on your system, run the command below

echo "deb [arch=amd64] https://wire-app.wire.com/linux/debian stable main" \
   | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/wire-desktop.list

Step 4 - Update your system

When you add a new repository on your system, in this case Wire repository, this repository won't be enabled automatically once you do that.

To enable Wire repository, so that you can use to download Wire, first you need to update the repository database on your system.

sudo apt-get update

Step 4 - Install Wire

Now you should be good to go, and run the command below to install Wire

sudo apt-get install wire-desktop

Uninstalling Wire

To uninstall Wire, you can do so by using the apt package manager

sudo apt remove wire-desktop --purge
