Vlc is one of the most popular players that you can use basically on any operating system.

On Linux VLC allows you to play multiple media formats, and you can use VLC to listen to music, radio online, watch tv channels and do a lot more.

VLC can be installed on Ubuntu by downloading the vlc package that is available on the main repositories of Ubuntu versions : 20.4, 22.04, 23.04, 23.10.

In this tutorial, you will learn how to install VLC Media Player on Ubuntu.

Step 1 - Update your system

It is important to update your system before you install VLC. Updating your system ensures that you have the latest version of packages running on your system.

Update your system with

sudo apt-get update

Step 2 - Install VLC

The vlc package is available on multiple Ubuntu repositories, which means you can install VLC Media Player on your system easily using your terminal.

To install VLC, simply run the command below

sudo apt-get install vlc

Note: 20.04, 22.04, 23.04 and 23.10 are the versions of Ubuntu where you can install vlc using the command above without having to add a repository.

Step 3 - Launch VLC

Now you can start using VLC on your machine. VLC icon should appear on the list of the applications on your system.

To launch VLC, go to "Applications Menu", and click to VLC icon to launch it.

Uninstall VLC Media Player

We installed VLC Media Player using the apt package manager, so to uninstall VLC, you can do so by using apt package manager again.

To uninstall VLC, run the following

sudo apt remove vlc
