VLC media player is a free and open source video player that you can use on any linux distro, including Arch Linux.

Vlc media player can be easily installed on Arch Linux, by using the default package manager, pacman, as vlc package is available in the Extra repository on Arch Linux.

In this tutorial, you will learn how to install VLC Media Player on Arch Linux.

Step 1 - Prepare your system

Before installing VLC on your Arch Linux machine, ensure that your system is updated.

Updating arch linux is easily done via the terminal, by using pacman.

To do so, launch your terminal first, by pressing CTRL + ALT + T, and then proceed to update your system via the command below.

sudo pacman -Syu

Next, confirm updating your system, by typing Y key, and then Enter.

Step 2 - Install VLC on Arch Linux

Once you have updated your Arch Linux machine, you can now proceed to download and install VLC on your system.

Since VLC package is available in the Extra repository on Arch Linux, to do download VLC, all you need to do is run the command below.

sudo pacman -S vlc

Next, you will see the following prompt, proceed to confirm that you wan to install VLC on your system by pressing Y key, and then simply press Enter.

Once VLC is installed, you will see the following output.

Step 3 - Confirm VLC installation on Arch Linux

After installing VLC on your Arch Linux machine, proceed to verify that VLC was installed correctly, to make sure that you can launch VLC without issues.

vlc --version

If the command above returns a similar output on your terminal, it means that VLC was installed correctly, and you should be able to use VLC.

Step 4 - Launch VLC on Arch Linux

VLC can be launched easily via terminal, or via Applications Menu.

To launch VLC via terminal on Arch Linux, simply issue the following.

vlc

Depending on the Desktop environment that you are using on your Arch Linux machine, you'll be able to find VLC in the media/multimedia category on the Applications Menu.

For example, we are using Gnome in Arch Linux, and to launch VLC we can either locate VLC manually on the Apps menu, or simply search for VLC.

Update VLC player on Arch Linux

To update VLC on Arch Linux, is very easy, and it can be done via pacman or any AUR helper, such as : Paru.

pacman allows you to update packages on your system, including VLC.

To do so, simply run the following command.

sudo pacman -Syu

VLC will appear on the list of the packages that will be updated.

Uninstall VLC on Arch Linux

If you no longer need VLC on your system, you can easily uninstall it via the terminal.

To uninstall VLC on Arch linux, simply use the -R option.

sudo pacman -R vlc
