How to install OBS Studio in Ubuntu 22.04 and Ubuntu 20.04

In this tutorial, you will learn how to install OBS Studio in Ubuntu 22.04 and Ubuntu 20.04.

OBS Studio is one of the most popular streaming app that allows you to stream to social networking sites such as :Youtube, Facebook, Twitch etc

OBS supports multiple operating systems, including Linux.

In Ubuntu 22.04 and Ubuntu 20.04, installation of OBS Studio can be done easily from your terminal by using the default package manager apt.

Install OBS Studio in Ubuntu 22.04/20.04

Step 1 - Update your system

Since we are going to download obs-studio package from the Universe repository in our machine, first thing that needs to be done is updating package index.

To do so, simply run the following.

sudo apt update

Step 2 - Install OBS Studio

Now that your package index is refreshed, you should be able to install the package obs-studio.

To install obs-studio via default package manager, run the command below.

sudo apt install obs-studio

Step 3 - Verify OBS Studio Installation

OBS Studio should be now installed on your machine, whether you are running Ubuntu 22.04 or Ubuntu 20.04.

Before you launch OBS Studio, first verify that it was installed correctly, on your machine.

One way of verifying the installation of obs-studio package, is to check obs-studio version.

obs --version

Step 4 - Launch OBS Studio

After verifying that obs studio package was installed correctly, proceed to launch it.

To launch OBS Studio, you can do so by using the terminal, or simply via the Applications Menu.

To launch OBS Studio via applications Menu, click to "Activities" then click to "Show apps" button, and then simply search for OBS Studio in the search box. And you should see OBS Studio icon, click that icon to launch OBS Studio.

Uninstall OBS Studio in Ubuntu 22.04/20.04

Uninstalling OBS Studio is done also from the terminal, by using apt.

To uninstall apt, simply run the command below.

sudo apt remove obs-studio


In this tutorial, you learned how to install OBS Studio in Ubuntu 22.04 and Ubuntu 20.04, by installing the official package of OBS Studio obs-studio via apt package manager.

obs-studio package can be found in the Universe repository for both Ubuntu versions mentioned above.
