In this tutorial, you will learn how to install Lutris in Debian 12.

Lutris is a free and open source app that allows you to manage your games on your Linux machine.

Lutris in Linux is like Steam in Windows.

With Lutris you can install and launch games easily.

Lutris is installed in Debian 12 via the official Lutris repository.

Install Lutris in Debian 12

Lutris provides a repository that you can use to install Lutris in Debian 12. All you have to do is add Lutris repository in your system, and you should be able to install lutris.

Step 1 - Setup Lutris repository

In order to be able to download and install lutris package in your Debian 12 machine, you need to setup lutris repository first.

To setup lutris repository in your Debian 12 machine, you can do so by running the command below.

echo "deb [signed-by=/etc/apt/keyrings/lutris.gpg] ./" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/lutris.list > /dev/null

Step 2 - Add Lutris GPG Key

Once you have added lutris repository in your Debian 12 machine, proceed to add lutris GPG key so that you can download lutris.

Lutris's GPG Key can be easily downloaded by running the command below.

wget -q -O- | gpg --dearmor | sudo tee /etc/apt/keyrings/lutris.gpg > /dev/null

Step 3 - Update your Debian 12 machine

In order to be able to use the lutris repository that you added, you need to update your machine first.

Updating is done so that the new repository that was added can be used.

To do so, simply run the following.

sudo apt update

Step 4 - Install lutris

lutris repository should be now active in your system, that means you can now proceed to install lutris via apt.

In your terminal, run the command below to install lutris.

sudo apt install lutris -y

Step 5 - Run Lutris

lutris should be now installed to your Debian 12 machine, which means you should be able to run lutris and use it to manage your games.

To launch lutris, you can use terminal.


However, you can also launch lutris via applications menu. If you are using a desktop environment other than gnome, then you can find lutris under "Games" category in the menu.

Uninstall lutris in Debian 12

Since we installed lutris by using the official repository, before removing lutris you need to make sure that lutris repository, and the gpg key is also removed if you don't need lutris anymore.

1) First remove lutris repository.

sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/lutris.list

2) Once lutris repository is removed, proceed to remove the gpg key.

sudo rm /etc/apt/keyrings/lutris.gpg

3) Now simply uninstall lutris.

sudo apt remove lutris
