In this tutorial, you will learn how to install Godot Game Engine on Ubuntu 22.04.

Universe repository on Ubuntu 22.04, contains the official package of godot, which you can download and install on your machine.

Downloading the godot package from the universe repository can be easily done by using apt in your terminal. However, this is not the only way to install Godot Game Engine on your Ubuntu 22.04.

Godot can also be installed by downloading the godot binary, which is already prebuilt from the official website of godot, godot binary allows you to run godot directly on your machine without having to install it.

In this tutorial, we'll be installing godot using apt, and downloading the prebuilt godot binary.

Install Godot on Ubuntu 22.04

You can install godot via two different methods that we mentioned above. In this tutorial, we'll cover both methods.

Step 1 - Update the system

Before installing godot, update the package index of your Ubuntu machine, to make sure that you can download the godot package, as this package is available in the universe repository of Ubuntu 22.04.

Even though universe repository is enabled by default on your system, updating is needed to avoid any problem.

To update your package index, you can do so by running the command below.

sudo apt update

Step 2 - Install Godot

Install Godot via apt

Your package index should now be updated, and you should be able to use it. To download godot game engine package, you can do so by using apt.

The official package of godot is godot3 so to proceed installing godot3, simply run the following.

sudo apt install godot3 -y

Install Godot via prebuilt binary

To install Godot via the prebuilt binary, can be done by simply downloading prebuilt binary which is available on the official Github repository of Godot.

1) Download Godot binary

You can use wget to download the prebuilt binary, to do so, simply run the command below.

wget -O

2) Extract via the command below.

Extracting a zip file can be done by using unzip command.


3) Move godot binary to /usr/local/bin

In order to be able to launch godot from your terminal without having to specify its path, you need to move the godot binary that you downloaded into your /usr/local/bin directory.

To move godot binary, you can do so by using the mv command.

sudo mv Godot_v4.2-stable_linux.x86_64 /usr/local/bin/godot4

4) Launch godot

We moved godot binary to /usr/local/bin and renamed it to godot4, which means to launch godot you need to run the command below.


Step 3 - Verify Godot Installation

Godot should be now installed on your Ubuntu 22.04 system. To verify that the installation process went fine, check godot version with.

If you installed godot via apt, then you can check godot version by running the command below.

godot3 --version

As you can see, we are running a stable versiof of godot.

If you installed Godot via the official prebuilt binary, then to check which version, simply run the following.

godot4 --version

Step 4 - Launch Godot

Launch godot installed via apt

Godot is now installed on your system, and you should be good to go and launch it.

To launch godot via terminal, simply run the following.


If you want to launch Godot via applications without using the terminal, then simply click to "Activities overview" and click "Godot" icon to launch it.

In cases when you have many apps and having issues to locate Godot on your apps, you can search for "Godot" in the search box.

Launch Godot installed via Prebuilt binary

In this tutorial, we moved the godot prebuilt binary to /usr/local/bin/godot4, so to launch godot, simply issue the following command.



In this tutorial, you learned how to install godot version 3 via the universe repository on Ubuntu 22.04, by using the apt package manager.

We also showed how to install Godot by downloading its prebuilt binary from the official github repository.

The difference between two installation methods is that, the latest package of godot on Ubuntu repositories was godot ver 3.2.3, while the prebuild binary was version 4.2.

So if you want to install godot version 3.2.3 you can use apt, if you want to install a newer version of godot, then simply use its prebuilt binary.
