How to install Flatpak on Arch Linux

In this tutorial, you will learn how to install Flatpak on Arch Linux.

Flatpak allows you install and run many applications in Arch Linux, and in any linux distro where Flatpak is installed.

If you are using Flatpak apps on a linux distro other than Arch Linux, and want to be able to run the same apps on your Arch Linux machine, all you need to do is install Flatpak.

Flatpak can be installed in Arch Linux, quite easily via pacman, by downloading the flatpak package that is listed in the extra repository.

In this tutorial, we'll install Flatpak on Arch Linux, via pacman.

Step 1 - Refresh pacman database

Extra repository is enabled in Arch Linux by default, which means all you need to do is refresh pacman database first, to make sure that you get the latest flatpak package from the extra repository.

sudo pacman -Syu

Step 2 - Install Flatpak

Now that pacman database is refreshed, you should be able to download flatpak package via pacman, and install it on your system.

To install Flatpak, all you need to do is run the command below.

sudo pacman -S flatpak

Next, confirm to install flatpak, by pressing Y and then enter.

Step 3 - Reboot

After installing Flatpak, you must reboot your system.

You can easily reboot Arch Linux, via the terminal.

To do so, simply run the command below.


Step 4 - Verify Flatpak Installation

Once you have rebooted your system, you must verify that Flatpak was installed correctly.

Proceed to check Flatpak version, to see if you can run Flatpak.

To check Flatpak version, simply run the command below.

flatpak --version

As you can see, Flatpak is installed and we were able to run Flatpak.

Installing Flatpak Apps on Arch Linux

Installing a flatpak app in Arch Linux, is done in the same way as installing a flatpak app on any Linux distro, which means you can easily install any Flatpak app on any linux distro where flatpak is installed.

Flathub is the repository that contains flatpak apps, so if you want to install a flatpak app on Arch Linux, you need to make sure that the app is available in the Flathub repository.

For example, to install Firefox via flatpak on Arch Linux, you can easily do so by running the command below.

flatpak install flathub org.mozilla.firefox

Once you run the command above, you will be asked to confirm installing Firefox, to do so, simply press the Y key, and then press enter.

Uninstalling Flatpak Apps on Arch Linux

To uninstall a Flatpak app in Arch Linux, you can do so by using the uninstall command.

In the example above, we installed Firefox via flatpak, to uninstall Firefox, you need to run the command below.

flatpak uninstall org.mozilla.firefox

Uninstalling a flatpak app also required you to confirm, proceed to confirm by pressing Y, and enter to remove firefox via flatpak.
