Guake is a python based terminal, and it's made for the Gnome desktop environment.

Guake is one of many linux terminals, that you can use on any linux distro.

The drop down feature allows you to launch your terminal directly from your panel, once you click the guake terminal, it launches the terminal window.

In this tutorial, you will learn how to install and use Guake terminal.

Install Guake terminal on Ubuntu

Step 1 - Add Guake PPA

Installing Guake on your Ubuntu machine is very easy. Before you install guake on your system, you need first to add Guake's PPA on your system.

This is the PPA that your system will be using to download Guake.

To add Guake PPA on your Ubuntu machine, simply run the command below

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:linuxuprising/guake

Step 2 - Enable Guake Repository

Next, proceed to enable Guake repository. To enable Guake repository, you need simply to update your Ubuntu machine, using the default package manager.

Once you update your system, the new repository that you added will become active, and then you can use it to install Guake on your system.

sudo apt-get update

Step 3 - Install Guake

Now you can install Guake terminal. Launch your terminal, and run the following command to install Guake.

sudo apt-get install guake

Step 4 - Use Guake

Once Guake terminal has been installed on your system, you are good to go and start using it.

To launch Guake terminal, run the command below


Next, you will see the Guake icon appearing on your panel at top right, click it and guake terminal window should launch on your desktop.

To open a new tab on Guake terminal, click to "+" button as shown in the image below

Now you should be good to go, and run commands on your Guake terminal window.

Uninstall Guake Terminal on Ubuntu

To uninstall guake terminal from your Ubuntu machine, you can do so by running the remove command

sudo apt remove guake --purge
