In this tutorial, you will learn how to enable Universe repository on Ubuntu 22.04.

Universe repository is a community maintained repository in Ubuntu 22.04, from where you can download many open source packages.

Universe repository is enabled by default in Ubuntu 22.04. However, there are cases when universe repository doesn't work after a fresh install of Ubuntu 22.04.

In such cases, you need to add universe repository manually, which can be done easily by using the add-apt-repository tool.

Add Universe repository in Ubuntu 22.04

To add Universe repository in your Ubuntu 22.04 machine, you can do so by using the add-apt-repository tool

First add the universe repository by running the command below

sudo add-apt-repository universe

Next, press enter to confirm adding universe repository in your system.

Verify Universe Repository

Once you have added Universe repository in your machine, you need to check if the Universe repository is added correctly.

There are many ways to check the current repositories in Ubuntu 22.04. However, in this tutorial, we'll be using the same tool add-apt-repository which can also show what repositories your system has enabled.

To view the current repositories, simply run the command below.

sudo add-apt-repository -L

Use Universe repository

Now that you have confirmed that Universe repository is enabled in your machine, you should be able to use it.

Using Universe repository, means being able to download and install a package from the Universe repository.

So the first thing that you need to do is , find a package that is listed in the Universe repository.

To find a package in the Universe repository is quite simple.

The codename for Ubuntu 22.04 is "Jammy Jellyfish", so on Distribution you need to select "Jammy"

Next, set Section to "Universe"

4) Search

Now simply type the package name that you want to look for.

If the package is available in the Universe repository you will see a similar output.

As you can see, the package gnome is available in the Universe repository for Ubuntu 22.04 "Jammy Jellyfish"

5) Install package

Once you verify that the package is listed in the Universe repository, you can proceed to install it via apt.

sudo apt install package
